The exhibition will bring together artists from Saudi Arabia and the surrounding region with artists from around the world presenting large-scale installations, including site-specific. Taking place within the breath-taking desertscape, Desert X AlUla 2022 featured fifteen site-specific temporary works that were commissioned under the curatorial vision of Reem Fadda, Raneem Farsi and Neville Wakefield. The blue pallets and colored passage stand out in contrast to the calm tones of the landscape. Desert X AlUla is the first international collaboration for Desert X, which was founded to connect desert communities and cultures through contemporary art. Desert X AlUla 2022 marks the second iteration of the acclaimed public outdoor exhibition in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. The exhibition which took place in the desert of AlUla, an ancient oasis in Saudi Arabia, brought together a plurality of voices, co-curated by Saudi curators Raneem Farsi and Aya Alireza with Desert X Artistic Director Neville Wakefield. It has a renewed pride of place as a cultural hub for the region. Desert X AlUla is a site-responsive exhibition that ran January 31 March 7, 2020. The pyramid’s shape itself points to AlUla’s importance, not just as a cradle of civilization of old, but more importantly, to its reawakening AlUla has embraced a new role as a center for the exchange of ideas rather than goods, and a generator of meaning and understanding rather than commerce. In AlUla, Al Shashai brings these two ideas together, constructing a pyramid from plastic pallets. The website notes that: “Here, it stands in for AlUla’s history as a major stop along the Incense Trade Route, a center where goods from various corners of the Earth once exchanged hands. Among the most dramatic installations is “A Concise Passage” by Rashed Al Shashai, in which a pyramid made of plastic pallets references both the site’s ancient history providing shelter and respite to travelers in trading caravans and modern-day commerce.
